We modified the given XSL templates for XML-to-HTML conversion so that the HTML output was optimized for the limited display capabilities of handheld devices. Among other changes to the autoconversion process, we replaced inaccessible entities, revised display styles, and restructured wide tables as multiple sets of column pairs. We provided the converted data pre-loaded on various palmtops.
A leading XML/SGML tool developer created a "proof-of-concept" demonstration for a client to illustrate the utility and flexibility of XML markup in processing and reusing data. A sample set of client data was marked up in XML, and autoconversion procedures were designed that produced a wide variety of output formats on several different devices, while easily and quickly re-converting modified data to produce new output.
